i want to make my own website and i wanted to know how do i get paid when someone visits my website, like if i were to go on facebook for 10 min does facebook Earn Money for me being online for 10 min. If not please correct me and tell me how does it work.

great!!here is my experience.
You will not get paid just someone visits your website.If you have google Adsense accounts or any other ppc programs. you can put ads in web pages and you will get paid when someone clicks on the ads.Its a nice ways to Make Money.
Even if you dont have google adsense account, you can sign up some Affiliate programs like paydotcom.com or cj.com and disply their products.you will get paid if some one buy from your site.

Making a website is very easy.,chose a topic and start. but you need to bring more visitors to your site. you can submit your website to search engines and web directories. you can do linkexchange to other websites which is having same topic.you can also make use of free website promoting blogs like blogzia.com to promote. so you will more visitors to your site. More visitors means more money ..wish you all the best . go on
